Collaborations

Mark Sullivan Workshops

27 August – 8 September 2019

In 2019 SCYO continued to collaborate with many outstanding ensembles and musicians within the broader community.

Amati String members worked with well-known string pedagogy Mark Sullivan. Mark spent two weeks workshopping with our students as well as local schools, Siena Primary, SC Grammar, Buderim Mountain and Chancellor State Primary Schools, and Pacific Lutheran College string students. The workshops culminated with a monster concert with all students coming together to work play two pieces.

Young Mannheim Symphonists Program with Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra

23 August 2019

Chamber Strings had the rare opportunity to work with ARCO (Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra) members – they spent a Friday afternoon in August workshopping Mozarts’ Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and Peter Warlocks’ Capriol Suite before parents arrived for the evening soiree. Thank you to the Sunshine Coast Council for their support and funding of this collaboration.

SCYO Youth Orchestra with Queensland Symphony Orchestra

24 & 26 September 2018

In the first week of the September school holidays, the SCYO and Queensland Symphony Orchestra joint forces to form a string orchestra and symphonic orchestra. Students benefited from a unique opportunity to be tutored by the QSO members, and string players had the added bonus of working with renowned string educator Mark Sullivan.

The week culminated in a performance at the Caloundra Events Centre on the evening of Wed 26th with members of the QSO and SCYO playing “Finlandia” by Sibelius and “The Dargason” from St. Paul’s Suite by Holst in the ensembles side-by-side. After the students have performed, the QSO performed a program of Movie Music under the baton of Guy Noble.

SCYO expresses our thanks to the Sunshine Coast Council for supporting and making this collaboration possible.

Mr Kim Kirkman – The 50th Anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast

August 2017 at Sunshine Coast Stadium. A collaboration directed and conducted by Mr Kim Kirkman, with Caloundra Chorale and Theatre Company, Caloundra Community Choir, Inspiration Choir Maleny, Orianna Choir, Sunshine Coast Choir, and USC Choir. The event featured the epic Carmina Burana by Carl Orff. An approaching storm meant the performance needed to be re-arranged on the fly, but the hundreds of performers were committed to giving it a red hot go, especially after all those months of rehearsals! (A close look reveals our vocal participation as the Children’s Choir as well…)

Xiamen Musical School

Joint performance with tourers from the music school at our sister city, Xiamen (China) August 2017 at Mountain Creek State High School. They are amazing performers!

Buderim Male Choir

Joint performance with the Buderim Male Choir May 19, 2016. The Choir very generously donated their funds raised, which was a significant contribution towards the purchase of an oboe for the SCYO, which was much appreciated. We enjoyed the performance and hope to do it again!
